Contamination of water by pesticides: a case study of the potatoes processing ExtensaoRural
Forgiarini, Francisco Rossarolla; Baggiotto, Carine; Santana, Natielo Almeida.
Contamination of water by pesticides is one of the main environmental problems. Among the agricultural crops, potatoes stand out, as they employ a large quantity of pesticides throughout their production. This article aims to present a case study on the potato processing activity, discussing the environmental licensing process of the activity and the analysis of the impacts caused by the release of effluents into the environment. The effluent was collected in a sedimentation tank of an English-type potato processing industry, sent to the Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory for the detection of the possible pesticides present, being analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and characterized physicochemically through temperature,...

Fisheries and the Environment. Policy Implementation and Fisheries Resource Management: Lessons from Senegal OceanDocs
Fishing plays an important role in the Senegalese economy and society. Indeed, it is a multipurpose activity that contributes towards reducing the balance of payments deficit, reducing unemployment and satisfying the protein needs of the population. Despite its importance, the fishing sector is facing serious socioeconomic disequilibria, which has lead to overfishing and the use of harmful methods of production. This, in turn, has resulted in the shortage of supplies to local markets and a reduction in protein intake for populations dependent on fishing. Furthermore, the strong tendency to export Senegalese piscatorial products has led to a shift in focus of the fishing effort from locally consumed species (pelagic) to export oriented ones (demersal),...

Institutional, Legal and Economic Instruments in Ghana's Environmental Policy OceanDocs
Boon, E.K.; Hens, L..
This paper reviews the state of the environment in Ghana and explores the potential for the use of institutional, legal and economic instruments in environmental management in the specific context of this developing country. The environmental situation in Ghana is characterised by desertification, land degradation, deforestation, soil erosion, desertification and inadequate water supply in the Northern regions of the country. The population as a whole is growing at a rate of 3% per annum, with even greater urban growth rates, due to rural out-migration. Large parts of the coastal zone in the south are rapidly developing to become one large suburbanised area. Water quality is particularly threatened in the urban and industrialised areas, which are mainly...

UNIDADES DE CONSERVAÇÃO, CONFLITOS SÓCIO AMBIENTAIS E O ENCURRALAMENTO DAS POPULAÇÕES LOCAIS NO NORTE DE MINAS AgEcon
Barbosa, Romulo Soares; Santos, Fabio Dias Dos.
